On 2nd Feb. 2026, Dr. Kaiwan K. Fatah was interviewed by Chennel 8, On the occasion of the symposium discussing the outcomes of COP30 and the contributions of the Kurdistan Region’s representatives, Dr. Kaiwan K. Fatah addressed the strategic importance of integrating climate commitments into regional development planning, with particular focus on the proposed Geopark initiative in the Kurdistan Region.
During the interview, Dr. Kaiwan highlighted how the conclusions of COP30 reinforce the urgency of climate adaptation, water resource protection, and ecosystem resilience—issues that are directly relevant to the Kurdistan Region. He emphasized that climate change is already affecting air quality, groundwater reserves, surface water systems, and increasing the frequency and intensity of droughts.
The discussion explored how establishing a geopark can serve as a scientific and environmental framework to mitigate climate risks, protect biodiversity, and promote sustainable management of natural resources. Dr. Kaiwan also underlined the importance of aligning regional strategies with global sustainability commitments, particularly SDG 13 (Climate Action) and SDG 14 (Life Below Water and ecosystem preservation).
