A Field Trip of Geotourism to the Geosites of Zakho Area

On October 25, 2025, Mr. Irfan Shaaban Asaad, a lecturer at the Department of Earth Science and Petroleum, College of Science, organized a scientific field trip for third-stage students of the same department as part of the Geotourism course.
The purpose of the trip was to enable students to evaluate geosites and assess their sustainability for tourism development. Geotourism has become one of the major sources of income for many countries, while also contributing to the conservation of scenic landscapes, as well as the sustainability of geodiversity and biodiversity.
This field trip, and the materials covered during it, are aligned with global sustainability targets, particularly:
SDG 11: Sustainable Cities and Communities (through arts, heritage, and community-based conservation), and
SDG 15: Life on Land (through sustainable management of land for educational, agricultural, and tourism purposes).
